We Tried The DIY Hair Mask Trend, Here's Our Results

how totrends

Here at LullaBellz, we love a hair hack or two - especially if it involves hair care! By taking ingredients you may already have at home (yepwe're talking about that unloved jar of Honey which has been sitting in our kitchen cupboard for months..) you can easily create DIY hair masks which are not only super affordable, but are incredibly nourishing and kind on your hair, too. Using an all natural blend of ingredients ensures there's no nasties (aka parabens and sulphates) - so you can always guarantee happy hair days. And, while conditioning salon treatments can be expensive, there are easy and simple DIY hair mask alternatives you can try at home without the fuss.

Honey, Avocado and Aloe Vera are some of the most commonly used and highly effective ingredients in at home hair masks. Not only are they completely safe to use on hair, but they can also leave your hair feeling thoroughly cleansed and revitalised after just one use. Honey is an ideal ingredient to lock in hair moisture, while Avocado hydrates the scalp by providing essential nutrients. Aloe Vera can aid in nourishing your hair follicles and replenish lost moisture, leaving you with hydrated and silky-smooth locks every time.

Not ready to ditch your hair care routine just yet? We've tried and tested them for you with our own ratings - so you can see which hair mask gets the LullaBellz stamp of approval, and which ingredients to keep in your kitchen!

HONEY HAIR MASK

What you'll need:
1/2 cup of Honey
1/4 cup of Olive Oil
A mixing bowl
A shower cap

Best for: Dry, damaged hair that needs some nourishment

Honey is best known for its softening qualities and to restore lustrous shine to hair. As an emollient, it is intensely moisturising and reaps a multitude of benefits across health, skin, nails and of course - hair.

Your first thought when combining honey and your hair might be 'surely that's SO sticky?' Fear not however, with the added ingredient of Olive Oil, the formulation and consistency becomes much more diluted and water-like, making it incredibly easy to work with and apply throughout your hair. The added benefit? Olive Oil is highly renowned for making hair more manageable and promoting hair growth, which is a yes from us!

Our thoughts? Having left the hair mask on our hair for around an hour using a shower cap to lock in the moisture before rinsing it off, the mask left our tresses feeling intensely moisturised with a brand new softness to it. As Olive Oil was one of the main ingredients however, it did take a few thorough rinses to rid of any excess product, which is our only downside. Next time, we'd probably use half of the mixture we initially made and only apply this to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair where its needed most.

ALOE VERA HAIR MASK

What you'll need:
4 Tablespoons of Aloe Vera Gel
2 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar
A mixing bowl
A shower cap

Best for: Brittle/weak hair that tends to break, or hair with an oily scalp

Whilst Aloe Vera isn't the easiest ingredient to obtain at the supermarket, we've found that Aloe Vera Gel works as an alternative. The plant is packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, B-12 and Folic Acid which are well-known to nourish and strengthen weak locks back to their best strong potential. Aloe Vera can also aid in reducing scalp irritation and inflammation, all whilst stripping excess oil and residue - resulting in a thoroughly cleansed and clarified scalp. Clean scalp = happy hair. The added ingredient of Apple Cider Vinegar can also aid in increasing the longevity of dyed hair, maintaining a colour refresh without the trips back to the salon.

Our thoughts? This mask was a lot easier to apply than the others, however we didn't feel any immediate difference or benefit worth noting about once it was rinsed out. Perhaps using the gel as opposed to the pure Aloe Vera plant was our drawback, but we'll know for next time! The mask did also leave a 'film' on our hair which meant we had to re-wash the hair to rid of all excess residue. We'd probably skip this hair mask in future and stick to the others!

AVOCADO HAIR MASK

What you'll need:
1 Medium Sized Avocado
2 to 3 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
A mixing bowl
A shower cap

Best for: Dry or thicker hair types that struggle to combat frizz

Avocado, best known for being delicious on toast (we're in our healthy girl era), is also incredibly beneficial for nourishing dry hair and bringing back to life manageable tresses without the unruly frizz. Packed with essential Vitamins A, B2, D and E, along with Biotin which is highly renowned for its substantial hair growth claims. By adding a few tablespoons of Coconut Oil provides a natural shine to hair and tames frizz.

Our thoughts? Once the hair mask was rinsed out, we definitely noticed that our hair was significantly softer and now had a glossy shine! Our hair felt a lot easier to tame in regards to frizz when styling, so it's a thumbs up from us! The only thing we weren't keen on with this hair mask was the thick texture and consistency. The Avocado was quite tricky to rid of all lumps when mixing, so it felt quite uneven when applying it throughout our hair. Perhaps blending the Avocado fruit in a food processor to ensure a completely smooth consistency is the key with this one.
